The purpose for this site is to encourage 2m simplex connections. The 2m band1 is available to all amateur radio license holders, including technician license holders. However, because of the 2m band’s relatively short distance coverage when compared to lower frequency (HF) bands, the 2m band appears virtually unused on Long Island outside of repeater access.

If any licensed ham wants to hold a formal or informal 2m net, please send in the details and we will post it on this site.

The 2m band’s lack of use is a shame because it is a resource that is available to technician license holders and while many repeaters, especially those that interconnect or support digital modes allow contacts across the state and even across the world, hams should know how to communicate locally, without relying on repeaters. There is nothing wrong with using a repeater but if you went to the trouble of getting a ham license, you should also get on the airwaves and call CQ!

  1. Simplex communications also include Single Side Band (SSB) which very few (if any) new HT’s support and digital modes like DMR, DSTAR and FUSION. ↩︎
